Shade and Tree Root Gardens

Fern & Root designs layered, naturalistic gardens that feel as though they have always belonged beneath the trees. These gardens are especially well suited to shady areas around mature tree roots where grass struggles to grow. Rather than fighting the conditions, we work with them—using shade-loving shrubs, ferns, groundcovers, native perennials, and seasonal blooms to transform difficult spaces into lush, inviting garden beds.

Each design is shaped around the existing trees, light, soil, roots, and character of the site so the garden feels settled, peaceful, and connected to its surroundings. The result is a welcoming retreat that celebrates the beauty of the woodland while creating habitat for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.
